Breckland goes ‘lighter’ with new Posh Pop range

Posh pop brand Breckland Orchard has announced the creation of a ‘no sugar’ range to add to its award-winning drinks portfolio.

The Cambridgeshire-based firm, which was created by former Mars sales and marketing exec, Claire Martinsen, will become the first producer of premium glass bottle presse style drinks to shift to a ‘super low calorie’ option with no added sugar, amid the increased media debate around excess consumption of the ‘sweet stuff’.

While all of the current Breckland Orchard range is made with a spring water base and is limited in the use of sugar, the three new products are specifically designed to appeal to those for whom ‘no sugar’ is the absolute preference.

Labelled the Posh Pop Lighter range, the three initial varieties available to retailers and wholesalers are Cloudy Lemonade, Elderflower and Ginger Beer with Chilli.

“There’s no getting away from the fact that consumers want the option of being able to purchase drinks which contain the bare minimum amount of sugar – if at all,” said Claire.

“While we’re proud of the fact that our existing popular Breckland Orchard Posh Pops are based on a spring water recipe and are not excessive in sugar usage, I felt it was important for us to go a step further – so the Posh Pop Lighter has been born in time for Spring 2015.”

The calorie level of each of the new presses is also marginal. These equate to 0kcal for the Elderflower, 3kcal for the Ginger Beer and 5kcal for the Cloudy Lemonade.

While some drinks producers have turned to the likes of grape juice to create ‘sugar free’ options, the Breckland variety adopts sweeteners for its recipe and remains ‘super low’ in calories.

“The timing of this new range is just as we mark our sixth year in business, and I’d like to think that we’ve really learned a lot about our consumer in that time and about what influences their purchasing,” added Claire.

“As a mother myself I know keeping sugar down for children is important, but also for adults who want to have a refreshing hydrating drink which isn’t piled with teaspoons of sugar. It also happens to be a good option for those watching their sugar intake because of a condition like diabetes.

“I’m really proud of the new range and am looking forward to hearing from retailers and wholesalers who are keen to get it in front of their customers as a drink of choice for this summer.”

Breckland Orchard was founded in 2009 by Claire Martinsen and was in part inspired by her grandmother’s homemade sparkling drinks.

Claire and the business have won a number of awards in the food and drink industry, as well as for entrepreneurship in the rural economy.
