‘Major protest’ planned over milk price crisis

A group representing disgruntled NI farmers are to stage a “major” protest in Belfast next week over the on-going milk price crisis.

Farmers for Action (FFA) have held a series of high-profile protests over the collapsing profits from milk production that is threatening to put many dairy farmers out of business.

According to flyer posted on an FFA social media site, farming families are asked to bring jeeps and tractors to the European Commission offices on the Dublin Road on Monday August 24, saying “the EU has a lot to answer for”.

The flyer said: “This protest will highlight this intolerable high-level lobbying and futhermore will serve to hold the EU to account on financial safety nets promised to EU rural dwellers and not delivered.”

The action is set to begin at 12 noon.
