New landfill regulations waste of money for local retailers

Local retailers binning more than 5kg of food leftovers per week will need to fork out for a separate waste collection when new rules come into force in April.

The Food Waste Regulations (Northern Ireland) 2015 coming into force on April 1 aim to regulate the amount of food waste sent to landfill by businesses every week.

The restrictions are not limited to cafes, restaurants and hotels, with the legislation – overseen by the Department of Agriculture, Environment, and Rural Affairs – listing “shops that sell food” as one of the business types targeted.

So if your workplace bins more than 5kgs of food such as leftover sandwiches, fruit peelings, coffee grounds, tea bags, or any other food waste each week, you need to dispose of it in a separate bin and have it collected separately from your general waste collection.

In anticipation of the new rules, food waste collection company RiverRidge Recycling is providing a new service for all sizes of business.

The company is compliant with the new legislation and one of Northern Ireland’s most respected recycling companies.

And in order to help local companies with the transition, RiverRidge Recycling is offering a food waste collection service free for the first three months for any customer that signs up before March 31.

“RiverRidge offers the most competitive collection prices in Northern Ireland today with rates as low as £4 per week,” the company said.
