Lidl Northern Ireland has announced a further £3 million investment in pay increases for its workforce in the region. All employees will benefit from the increase which took effect on Friday 1st March 2024.

Lidl Northern Ireland has invested £6 million in pay rises for employees in the region with employees benefitting from a 13.5% increase since February 2023. This latest investment will result in every Lidl employee in the region benefitting from an approximate 6% pay rise, equal to, on average, £1,300 additional for every employee per annum.

Commenting on the announcement, Maeve McCleane, Chief People Officer at Lidl Ireland & Northern Ireland said: “Navigating the changing face of retail against the backdrop of rising cost-of-living, climate crisis and the impact of global geo-political events has been no easy feat, which is why now more than ever it is vital for us to continue to prioritise our people – an investment we will never compromise on.

“We have a strong commitment to our customers to offer them the best value in the market and our people are key for us to deliver on that promise. We are proud to reward the hard work and dedication of our employees by investing an additional £3 million in pay rises impacting every employee in the business making Lidl the highest paying supermarket in Northern Ireland.”

Maeve McCleane, Chief People Officer at Lidl Ireland & Northern Ireland.

Lidl Northern Ireland employs more than 1,300 people across its 41-strong store network and regional distribution centre in Nutts Corner. Northern Ireland’s fastest-growing supermarket is marking 25 years of growth in the region this year, with several new stores in the pipeline and a growing network of local suppliers.

Backed by its successful ‘Big on Quality, Lidl on Price’ proposition, Lidl Northern Ireland plans to open new stores this year at Boucher Road in Belfast, in Carryduff and in Cookstown where its journey began in 1999. Other stores planned include Bangor, Craigavon, Dungannon, Coleraine and Newcastle.

For the fourth year running, Lidl Northern Ireland has been recognised by the Top Employers Institute as a Top Employer for 2023. Lidl is the only retailer to receive the accreditation in the region. The Top Employer accreditation is a globally recognised and highly sought-after certification, held by international brands such as Heineken, Puma, and PepsiCo. It showcases an organisation’s dedication to a better world of work, exhibited through excellent HR policies and people practices.

Lidl Northern Ireland is going big on quality for Easter with the launch of its new chocolate egg range which the retailer predicts Northern Irish shoppers will go ‘hopping mad’ for, as sweet-toothed shoppers opt for luxury at lower prices with Northern Ireland’s best value retailer.

Chocoholics across the country can indulge in Lidl Northern Ireland’s expanded range of Deluxe large and medium sized eggs, incorporating a mix of much-loved family favourites and some egg-citing new flavour options this Easter, starting from just £4.49.

Rebecca Buchanan, Senior Buyer at Lidl Ireland and Nothern Ireland said: “With hundreds of thousands of Easter eggs sold across our Northern Irish store network last year, we’re predicting shoppers will take an even bigger bite this year from our expanded range of premier Deluxe 100% Irish eggs.

“Easter is an important time for family celebration and our quality range of locally handcrafted Irish eggs are real family favourites. We’re excited to expand our range this year with some great new flavours and sizes, which we’re sure will go down a treat.

“With Easter just around the corner, we’re delighted to roll out our sumptuous full range of chocolate eggs in-store from this week. As Northern Ireland’s best value retailer, we’re confident shoppers can find the perfect celebration egg for their palette and enjoy premium luxury at value price this Easter.”

This Easter, shoppers can enjoy the indulgence of premium Deluxe chocolate with a taste of home as all of Lidl Northern Ireland’s Deluxe eggs have been handcrafted exclusively for the retailer by Cavan-based Áine’s Handmade Chocolates.

The chocolatier has been supplying Lidl Northern Ireland for the last four years and in that time has tripled its supply of Easter Eggs and continues to supply seasonal chocolates throughout the year as part of a wider supply deal valued at more than half a million euro.

Lidl Northern Ireland is first supermarket in region to rollout out ‘Waste Not’ initiative https://neighbourhoodretailer.com/lidl-northern-ireland-is-first-supermarket-in-region-to-rollout-out-waste-not-initiative/ Thu, 16 Feb 2023 15:46:08 +0000 https://neighbourhoodretailer.com/?p=26038 Lidl Northern Ireland has become the first supermarket retailer in the region to implement a rollout of a major new initiative aimed at reducing food

Lidl Northern Ireland has become the first supermarket retailer in the region to implement a rollout of a major new initiative aimed at reducing food waste and bringing shoppers even more savings at the tills.

Lidl Northern Ireland’s Waste Not boxes, priced at just £2.50, will contain at least 5kg of mixed fruit and vegetables which are perfectly good to eat but have been separated from other products which have become slightly damaged and removed from multipacks.

The retailer’s Waste Not boxes are the ideal solution for those looking to achieve a balance of eating a healthy diet while also saving money, with the approximate full retail value of the produce in the boxes totalling £5-£7.

FRESHNESS CHECKS

The fruit and veg boxes from Lidl Northern Ireland will be picked and packed daily by the retailer’s dedicated in-store Green Leaders, who conduct freshness checks on fresh produce four times a day. Boxes will be available to customers daily until stocks last every day, at which point, any leftover boxes will be given to local good causes through Lidl Northern Ireland’s surplus food redistribution partnership with FoodCloud.

The initiative was announced after a successful trial period, which launched in September 2022, saw more than 3,700 Waste Not boxes sold and prevented 18,500kg of food going to waste. It is estimated that the region-wide rollout will save a further 222,000kg of food waste per year.

Robert Ryan, Chief Operating Officer, Lidl Ireland and Northern Ireland said: “Lidl Northern Ireland’s new Waste Not fruit and veg boxes initiative is a great way for customers to eat healthily at an affordable price. Crucially, the initiative plays a significant role in our overarching sustainability strategy and helps protect the planet and our local communities by helping combat the important issue of fresh food going to landfill.

“We have a dedicated team of Green Leaders who will ensure that the fruit and veg that make it to the boxes are of the highest quality that customers have come to expect when shopping with Lidl Northern Ireland, and we look forward to seeing more shoppers benefit from this scheme which has already been so well received.”

SUSTAINABILITY STRATEGY

The initiative is the latest move by the retailer to further its ambitious sustainability strategy and is an extension of Lidl Northern Ireland’s established Waste Not initiative which reduces food waste across its store network by around 137,500kg annually.

Launched in 2019, the scheme offers customers a significant price reduction on a range of chilled food products that have reached their best before date but are still perfectly fresh and fine to eat.

Lidl Northern Ireland has been working with FoodCloud since 2017 and through this partnership has redistributed the equivalent of over 3.5 million meals to charities across the region.
