After a summer of giveaways, Shaun Michaels from Belfast has bagged the top prize of £6,000 cash in SPAR NI’s 60th birthday bonanza.

A regular at SPAR Titanic, Shaun scanned his way into the grand final draw by picking up his favourite enjoy local products each week and entering via the QR code. He is now planning to fly stateside just as soon as he can, thanks to his winnings.

Give My Head Peace

Give My Head Peace star, Olivia Nash, who made SPAR a household name back in the ‘80s as the voice of the “Fred, we’ve no bread” TV ad, presented the winner with a cheque for £6,000 recently.

Shaun, who lived in the U.S for 12 years says he’ll be putting some of his winnings towards a trip back to see friends, but also spending it closer to home. He commented; “We just can’t believe it! We love shopping at SPAR, so it was easy for us to just scan through and enter once we got home.

“It’s great that SPAR is doing giveaways like this to make us all feel a part of their birthday celebrations, especially when it means we can do fun things like travel and enjoy a swanky meal, but also be a little bit sensible and pay off a bit of the mortgage!”

Jonny Agnew, Food Development Marketing Manager at Henderson Group added; “We received over 16,000 entries for the giveaways, where two shoppers per week won a £600 SPAR voucher over the past five weeks, and of course Shaun picking up the £6,000 grand prize.

Celebrate good times

“Connecting with our shoppers is very important to us and is what makes us part of their local communities for 60 years now. We’re delighted to share our celebrations with our shoppers and retailers and look forward to doing more over the remainder of the year.”

Olivia Nash added; “It’s been a pleasure being part of SPAR NI’s 60th birthday celebrations. I want to wish Sean a big congratulations, I hope he enjoys spending his winnings! Many happy returns to SPAR NI, here’s to the next 60!”

SPAR NI’s 60th birthday celebrations continue over at spar-ni.co.uk and SPAR NI Facebook.

SPAR NI has raised over £97,000 for Marie Curie in just six months, smashing through its £60K in a year fundraising target in celebration of the brand’s 60th birthday in Northern Ireland.

Over £50,000 alone was raised during the outstanding success of the Blooming Great Birth-tea Parties in June, where retailers across NI donned silly wigs, felt the burn through spin-a-thons, held giveaways and raffles, all while exchanging a cuppa and a bun for donations to Marie Curie, the brand’s charity partner for the past four years.

£26,000 has also been raised through the sale of branded Marie Curie face coverings throughout stores in NI. A total of £452,000 has now been raised by SPAR NI since the beginning of the partnership, bringing the team ever closer towards the half a million-pound milestone.

Fantastic comeback

Bronagh Luke, Head of Corporate Marketing at Henderson Group which owns the SPAR brand in Northern Ireland said they are delighted to have smashed through their target of £60,000 – one they hoped to achieve by the end of the year.

“What a fantastic comeback for our in-store fundraising for Marie Curie, we are just so grateful to our retailers and store teams for buying into the concept and all of our shoppers who supported their local stores and this fantastic charity on the day.

“To reach this figure halfway through our birthday year just goes to show what we can achieve for those who most need it in our local communities, and we are determined to keep the fundraising going for the rest of this special year and beyond.”

It’s been 60 years since SPAR NI arrived in Northern Ireland in 1961, and the team at Hendersons has been ensuring its shoppers, retailers and charity partners are celebrated all year.

Conor O’Kane, Senior Partnership Manager at Marie Curie added; “This is just fantastic! We were blown away when SPAR NI pledged the £60,000 for the year and for them to reach £97,000 already is just incredible, but not surprising as we know how much hard work the team puts into such events, as well as the support from loyal retailers and shoppers.

Birth-tea Party

“I had a lot of fun meeting Olivia Nash at SPAR Sunnyside Street for their birth-tea party, it was great to see such an effort made by the store, and all stores, to create a safe space to raise the vital funds needed to keep our nursing care in the community and Hospice services thriving.”

SPAR’s enjoy local round cake continues to be on sale throughout the rest of the year, with 60p from the sale of each cake going towards SPAR and EUROSPAR charity partners.

In celebration of SPAR NI’s 60th birthday, the brand has pledged to raise £60,000 for Marie Curie this year and is dedicating their birthday month to the charity.

June is the month of Marie Curie’s Blooming Great Tea Parties, which SPAR NI stores will transform into birthday parties, welcoming their shoppers for a cuppa and a bun in exchange for a donation to the charity on Saturday 19 June.

Throughout the summer, SPAR will donate 60p from the sale of each SPAR enjoy local round cake to their charity partners and are encouraging stores to ramp up the fundraising possibilities in a safe way on the day.

Tea Parties

Bronagh Luke, Head of Corporate Marketing at Henderson Group explained; “From 2017, we created the biggest Blooming Great Tea Party by hosting over 200 in-store events across our SPAR stores, raising over £182,000 through this initiative alone.

“The pandemic has caused a very challenging year for the charity, and although we were able to create the Pick me up Picnic to raise some much-needed funds over the summer, and donate £30,000 from our recent Buy A Bunch to Give A Bunch campaign for the Great Daffodil Appeal, we are thrilled to be able to get back on track and transform the tea parties into birthday parties as we celebrate 60 years of SPAR serving local communities.”

Each fundraiser will be compliant with restrictions and government guidelines, and Bronagh explains that is paramount to a successful event.

“We are encouraging retailers to create a safe space that shoppers can browse, donate and have a quick chat about Marie Curie and how SPAR is helping ensure services continue in our local communities. Some stores will brighten up the shop floor by wearing yellow in tribute to the charity, some will be testing their fitness with a ‘spinathon’, and others will hold a raffle and have prizes to give away. We are staying safe, but we are dedicated to supporting our charity partner during our year of celebrations.”

‘Fred, there’s no bread’

Olivia Nash, the actor who made the “Fred, we’ve no bread” line a household saying back in the ‘80s, has also been involved in the 60th celebrations and will be calling into SPAR Sunnyside Street to meet shoppers and staff for their event on the 19th June

The initiative will be supported by a full marketing campaign for retailers taking part, including SPAR in store radio announcements, a Q Radio partnership and competition with extra exposure across SPAR NI social media channels and website. Tayto has also come on board as sponsors of the initiative.

Tayto on board

Bronagh added; “It’s fantastic to have Tayto on board as they will really bring the party to life with their selection of crisps and popcorn. They have also contributed fabulous prizes for shoppers to get their hands on and join in on the celebrations.”

Conor O’Kane, Senior Partnership Manager at Marie Curie added; “Yet again, SPAR NI has surpassed our expectations and planned a fantastic initiative to include us in their birthday celebrations. To pledge £60K to Marie Curie during their birthday year means that we could provide 3,000 extra hours of nursing care in the community or provide a 24-hour stay in our Hospice for 150 patients to get the hands-on care they need.

“We’re looking forward to joining our retailer friends at SPAR NI on Saturday 19 June for a morning of safe and fun fundraising.”
