Many shops are due to close on Monday September 19 as a sign of respect to mark the Queen’s funeral.

A bank holiday across the UK was approved by King Charles III for the day of his mother’s funeral.

UK chains such as John Lewis, Waitrose, Aldi and Lidl have said they will close on the day as a sign of respect.

Homebase, WH Smith, B&Q, Primark, Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Argos, Ikea and Blue Diamond Garden Centres have all also said that they will close stores on the day.

Sainsbury’s said online grocery deliveries as well as fast-track deliveries from its Argos subsidiary would also be halted. Sainsbury’s convenience stores and petrol filling stations will be open from 17:00 until 22:00 while select stores in central London will open to serve people attending the funeral.

A Sainsbury’s spokesperson said its decision was “in honour of Her Majesty and so our colleagues can pay their respects”.

Larger Tesco shops will also be closed on the day. The company’s smaller Express shops will open at 5pm.

A spokesperson for fashion retailer Primark said: “Our stores, depots and Head Office in the UK will be closed… to give our colleagues the opportunity to pay their respects and watch the funeral… We will reopen as normal on Tuesday 20 September.”

An Ikea UK spokesperson said: “Out of respect, and to enable our co-workers to participate in the funeral, Ikea UK will pause its business operations, including closing all of our UK stores on Monday 19 September.”

All WH Smith’s High Street stores will be closed for the whole day, while its travel stores will be closed at least for the duration of the funeral.

Homebase said: “We join the country in mourning the passing of HM Queen Elizabeth II and will be closing our stores on the day of her funeral.”

It added that the decision had been made “so our team members can choose to mark her incredible life of service”.

B&Q said it would close all its UK stores “as a mark of respect” on the day. It said the decision would also offer its staff “the opportunity to pay their respects”.

Click and collect and home delivery services will also be temporarily suspended on the day, B&Q added.

Poundland have said they will shut their doors for the day out of respect and to allow staff to watch the event.

The Royal Mail has announced that its postal services will be suspended on the day.

The government advises on its website that the additional Bank Holiday “will allow individuals, businesses and other organisations to pay their respects to Her Majesty and commemorate Her reign, while marking the final day of the period of national mourning.”

Although it says that some businesses “may wish to consider closing or postponing events”, there is no statutory entitlement to time off for workers.

Nisa’s Making a Difference Locally charity has launched a third round of its Heart of the Community Awards initiative, which will support communities across the UK in celebrating the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee this year.

The Heart of the Community Awards will this time enable Nisa partners to nominate a local group, charity or good cause to receive up to £1,000 of funding from Making a Difference Locally, to help communities celebrate the historic occasion with events such as afternoon teas, garden parties and street parties.

Nominations will be accepted from Nisa partners via a dedicated website until 18th March and 70 winners, to mark the Queen’s 70-year reign, will be selected to receive funding for their community celebrations. Donations could be used towards entertainment, equipment, food and drinks, venue hire or decorations, and each winning good causes will also receive a decorative MADL POS kit with bunting.

Kate Carroll, Nisa’s Head of Charity, said: “We received a fantastic response to our two previous rounds of funding, so we’re delighted to be able to bring back the Heart of the Community Awards for a third round of donations.

“This special Jubilee edition of the Awards will give the opportunity for 70 of our fantastic Nisa retailers to celebrate this exciting and joyous event with the communities they serve, bringing people together to mark the Queen’s historic reign.”

Almost 90 good causes nationwide have benefitted from donations totalling more than £310,000 in previous rounds of the Heart of the Community Awards initiative, cementing it as Making a Difference Locally’s biggest funding giveaway to date.

Business representatives from Ballymena are throwing their support behind the council’s bid to make the town a city.

Mid and East Antrim Borough Council has officially launched its bid to see Ballymena awarded city status last month as part of a UK-wide competition to mark the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee in 2022.

Ballymena Chamber of Commerce and Ballymena Business Improvement District (BID) are backing the ‘City of Seven Towers’ bid in the hope that the accolade will not only attract potential investors but also create jobs, boosting the local economy.

The Mayor of Mid and East Antrim, Councillor William McCaughey said: “This is an opportunity to secure fitting recognition for Ballymena and the wider borough as a critical hub for leisure and tourism, business and innovation, and culture and heritage in Northern Ireland. I’m so pleased to see two of the town’s local business organisations get on board and support this bid for city status.

“Through this competition, we will showcase all that is good about our ‘City of the Seven Towers’ and the surrounding area. We have so much to celebrate and to be proud of in Ballymena. Being awarded city status would be a hugely prestigious honour for the borough, generating tremendous civic pride, boosting investor confidence, creating jobs and increasing economic growth.”

Seven Towers heritage

Harnessing Ballymena’s ‘seven towers’ heritage, over the coming weeks, Council will showcase seven main themes all aimed at promoting the rich tapestry of local talent and personalities, the industrial past and world-leading businesses, attractions and areas of outstanding natural beauty surrounding Ballymena, and unique cultural identity.

Council is encouraging everyone to share their stories and support of why Ballymena is such a great place to live, work and enjoy by using the #CityOfSeven hashtag on social media.

‘Resilience and determination’

Eugene Reid, president of Ballymena Chamber of Commerce said: “Ballymena has always punched well above its weight in terms of business. The manufacturing heartland and market town has consistently showed its resilience and determination to succeed. City status will not only cement the pride of its residents and those who work here, but boost investor confidence, creating jobs and increasing economic growth.”

Stephen Reynolds, chair of Ballymena BID also welcomed the competition entry: “It’s a great opportunity for the town to showcase its heritage and tell its stories about the fantastic people and places that make this area so unique. The BID’s vision is to create a welcoming and distinctive location for all to shop, visit, experience and enjoy, and being awarded city status will certainly help bolster these core aims whilst benefitting everyone locally.”

Whilst the number of awards to be made has not been stipulated, the UK Government has encouraged local authorities across the four regions of the UK to enter the competition and make a case for why their area is worthy of one of these honours.

All valid entries will receive individual consideration on their merits, before overall recommendations are made by ministers to the Queen.
