{"id":4544,"date":"2017-01-24T14:01:27","date_gmt":"2017-01-24T14:01:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/neighbourhoodretailer.com\/?p=4544"},"modified":"2017-01-24T14:01:27","modified_gmt":"2017-01-24T14:01:27","slug":"jti-takes-stand-illegal-tobacco","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/neighbourhoodretailer.com\/jti-takes-stand-illegal-tobacco\/","title":{"rendered":"JTI \u2018takes a stand\u2019 against illegal tobacco"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>JTI has taken further action on the illegal tobacco trade by removing its stands from two retailers found to be selling illicit products.<\/h2>\n<p>During the Christmas and New Year period, JTI removed gantries from two stores, 6 till 11 in Ilford and Micklefield Superstore in High Wycombe.<\/p>\n<p>Both stores had been prosecuted for dealing in illegal tobacco and ordered to pay fines and costs totalling \u00a33,245.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4548\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4548\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-4548 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/neighbourhoodretailer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/Micklefield-Superstore-2-300x194.jpg\" alt=\"Micklefield Superstore, where one of the gantries was removed\" width=\"300\" height=\"194\" srcset=\"https:\/\/neighbourhoodretailer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/Micklefield-Superstore-2-300x194.jpg 300w, https:\/\/neighbourhoodretailer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/Micklefield-Superstore-2-620x400.jpg 620w, https:\/\/neighbourhoodretailer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/Micklefield-Superstore-2-85x54.jpg 85w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4548\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Micklefield Superstore, where one of the gantries was removed<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In addition, JTI informed the owner of Good Morning Superstore in Harrow that they will no longer receive support and expertise from the company following action by the local authority revoking their premises license for dealing in illegal tobacco and alcohol.<\/p>\n<p>Charlie Cunningham-Reid, JTI\u2019s UK head of corporate affairs said: \u201cJTI has again demonstrated its commitment to take action against those retailers found to be selling illegal tobacco.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAhead of the May 20 deadline to sell branded cigarette and RYO packs, our actions and that of the law enforcement agencies should serve as timely reminders to any retailer tempted to sell illegal tobacco products in their shops.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAny retailer who attempts to exploit the new environment will find that alongside tobacco manufacturers, Trading Standards Departments and HMRC will continue to investigate, disrupt and prosecute those involved in the illegal tobacco trade.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>JTI\u2019s said their message has always been clear: \u201cIf it seems too be good to be true, then it probably is. Retailers must only get their stock from a reputable cash and carry or their known tobacco company representative.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>JTI said it was also renewing its call for other category partners in the distribution chain to join them and \u2018Take a Stand\u2019 by withdrawing support from any retailer who sells illegal tobacco.<\/p>\n<p>Retailers that who know of criminals supplying illegal cigarettes in their area are asked to contact the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111 or the Customs Hotline on 0800 59 5000.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>JTI has taken further action on the illegal tobacco trade by removing its stands from two retailers found to be selling illicit products.
