However, the figures typically show a lengthy time lag, and cover 2020, when the food and drink sector increased turnover by 0.9 per cent to £5,424 million.

Daera says that provisional estimates for 2021 project a 6.4 per cent increase to £5,769 million.

However, these are the two years covering lockdown, when hospitality and the foodservice industry were shut down for long periods, and people were largely consuming at home.

In the period covered by the latest report, the sector contributed 39.3 per cent to total manufacturing sales in Northern Ireland, up from 36.6 per cent in 2019. It also accounted for 42.5 per cent of external manufacturing sales and 26.8 per cent of export sales.

Between 2019 and 2020, sales were up significantly in Britain (by £107.7m) and in the Republic (up £13.3m) but decreased in Northern Ireland (down £0.3m), other EU countries (down £25.3m) and in the rest of the world (down £47.4m).

Britain remains the sector’s largest market, accounting for 48.9 per cent of sales in 2020, an increase from 47.3 per cent in 2019, though the data was collected before the implementation of the NI Protocol.

The estimated number of direct full-time employee equivalents in the food sector in Northern Ireland rose 0.8 per cent to 25,078, and is projected to grow further to 25,105 in 2021.

The value added by the sector to the Northern Ireland economy increased by 8.4 per cent to £1,088 million in 2020.

Michael Bell, executive director at the Northern Ireland Food and Drink Association (NIFDA) said: “Food and drink continues to be a key driver for growth in the region, remaining the largest manufacturing sector locally, accounting for over 30 per cent of total manufacturing employment.

“The figures relate to 2020, a challenging year for all industries at the height of the Covid-19 pandemic, and the success of Northern Ireland food and drink in that period is a testament to the resilience of the sector, and its ability to rapidly respond to the challenges of the pandemic.

“But while the sector continues to grow, it remains hampered by the lack of a capital investment support scheme.

“We are at a stark competitive disadvantage to our regional neighbours, as the only jurisdiction on these islands without a capital support scheme.

“A comprehensive capital investment programme is essential for future proofing the industry, and would boost our ability to innovate in quality, productivity and sustainability.”

Consumers craving health benefits and novelty from beverages, according to new Kerry report https://neighbourhoodretailer.com/consumers-craving-health-benefits-and-novelty-from-beverages-according-to-new-kerry-report/ Wed, 24 Aug 2022 12:59:06 +0000 https://neighbourhoodretailer.com/?p=24676 Beverages associated with health benefits, sustainability and better nutrition are soaring in popularity among foodservice consumers, according to a new analysis by Kerry, the world’s

Beverages associated with health benefits, sustainability and better nutrition are soaring in popularity among foodservice consumers, according to a new analysis by Kerry, the world’s leading taste and nutrition company.

Kerry’s latest research into foodservice beverages shows consumers are seeking flavours that they link with health and nutrition benefits such as strawberry, lemon and mango, but are also seeking excitement and a sensory experience through newer formats like Frappuccino and bubble tea.

Examining nearly 400 limited time offerings (LTOs) across 12 regions in Europe, the new Art of Taste and Nutrition 2022 summer analysis categorises the top beverage platforms and flavours, while examining future trends and influences across the world. According to the research, the top three LTO trends are as follows:

  • Travel through taste: Moving beyond just a beverage, LTOs can also deliver an experience. Many outlets this year launched beverages with flavours such as mango, pineapple, passion fruit and coconut to create a tropical island experience for the senses.
  • Natural refreshment: Consumers are craving a cool, refreshing beverage, with many now focusing on flavours they consider natural and local to the different European regions such as lemon and strawberry.
  • Health and nutrition focus: Consumers are looking to foodservice outlets for healthier options. Nutrition focused LTO ranges need to deliver not only great taste but also health benefits through fortification and healthy halo ingredients.

Commenting on the new report, Daniel Sjogren, VP and General Manager for Foodservice in Kerry Europe, said:

“With markets in Europe fully re-opened this summer, foodservice operators find themselves once again competing for consumers attention. LTOs have come back with a vengeance and are more popular than ever. We have found that consumers are looking for exciting sensory experiences, with the rise of bubble tea and drinks that are a visual experience and shareable on social media.

“Fruit flavours continue to be the core flavour offering for summer LTOs across Europe but with two clear distinctions. Firstly, exotic flavours have become more prominent in consumers’ minds as they remind themselves of their favourite holiday destinations. However, consumers are also becoming more conscious of their own health and are seeking out flavours aligned to their personal nutrition needs.”

Future trends

Looking towards 2023, it is clear that sustainable nutrition will continue to gain traction with consumers more concerned with both their physical and mental health post-pandemic and the health of the planet. They are also more interested in unique menu items, with foodservice operators now having to consider not only taste but look, texture and smell to create a complete sensorial experience.

“Our prediction for the future is that sustainability along with nutrition will continue to become more important as consumers look for great tasting beverages that are better for them and better for the planet. However, many operators find it challenging to deliver on these evolved trends while also being able to communicate them to their consumers in a meaningful way. At Kerry, we look forward to partnering with customers to bring our insights to life and deliver exciting new concepts for summer 2023,” adds Mr Sjogren.

Foodservice provider Sysco Ireland has unveiled plans to double the size of its Northern Ireland operation within five years as part of an ambitious growth strategy.

The company is investing £23million in the proposed development of a state of the art distribution facility at Nutt’s Corner, County Antrim.

Once completed, the new facility is expected to create 90 new jobs, taking Sysco’s workforce in Northern Ireland to 230.

Mark Lee, CEO of Sysco Ireland, said the new plans have been ‘driven by strong customer demand in Northern Ireland’.

“The project forms part of Sysco’s wider growth strategy, which with continued investment in our offering, innovation and people, has helped to establish the business as the leading foodservice provider on the island of Ireland,” he said.

“The investment in the new facility, which is subject to planning approval, has been driven by strong customer demand in Northern Ireland.

“We are excited by the opportunities that our proposed new site will deliver for our ambition to grow in Northern Ireland, supporting investment and innovation in the sector and local job creation.

“Sustainability is also a key consideration in the development plans, with the design incorporating solar panels on the roof, rainwater harvesting and advanced heat pump technology.

“We are committed to providing electric vehicle chargers for both staff and fleet vehicles.”

The proposals are currently being advanced by Heron Brothers, an award-winning construction and property development company which operates throughout the UK, Ireland and Europe.

Paul Mulholland, property director at Heron Bros, explained how the project was a great example of traditional values with an advanced, innovative approach to construction.

“We are delighted to bring forward these exciting proposals at Nutt’s Corner, which promises to bring great benefits to the local area,” he said.

“Heron Bros prides itself on how we have been able to combine our traditional values with an advanced, innovative approach to construction. This project is a great example of this, combining innovative technologies designed to enhance sustainability, within a state-of-the-art storage and distribution centre.”

Prior to the submission of a planning application to Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council, a pre-application community consultation will take place, with a public exhibition on Tuesday, August 9 from 3-8pm at Maldon Hotel, Belfast International Airport.

A consultation website will also launch today (Tuesday, August 2) at www.heronbrosconsultation.co.uk.
