Retailers hope for Christmas cheer

As boughs of holly busy themselves with decking the nation’s halls, there is some concern economic uncertainty may mean silent nights in our local convenience stores.

However, a quick poll of local retailers has shown Christmas spirits are high, with NI stores preparing for a season of good will for convenience retail.

Speaking to Neighbourhood Retailer in the Yuletide run-up, manager of Co-Op Oldpark Road, Stephen McMahon, said his store is preparing for its “strongest year ever”.

“This year, because of our pricing, we’re confident it’s going to be the best year we’ve ever had,” he said. “We have a huge amount of new lines and, compared to last year, our sales are up 7% overall. Footfall has also increased dramatically, so we’re confident.”

John Clarke, owner of Costcutter on the Belfast Road outside Bangor, shared Stephen’s optimism.

“I’m feeling very positive and this is, of course, the best trading time of the year,” he said. “We’re doing a lot of promotions over the next few weeks, with Costcutter leaflet drops, and our own leaflet drops too. Along with £2.99 Christmas sweets, we’re giving away a bottle of Shloer with every spend over £20.”

But John felt there was still work to do to maximise the period.

“It’s very important what we do in the store. There’s a lot of talk about Brexit, and worry about the future, so we’re making sure people see the value of shopping here and are aware of the standard of customer service we have.”

Jim McConnon, area manager at Hoey’s Mace, also believes there is a more confidence among consumers compared to last year.

“We’re seeing better footfall across all three of our sites. There’s definitely a bit more spending happening. We’re working hard to get the value from that, so maybe we’ll see the fruits of the effort we’re put in. I definitely think things are a bit more positive.”
