Aldi to install traffic light system to limit customers

Aldi is set to introduce a traffic light system to limit the number of customers in its stores during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Following at successful trial, the budget supermarket is launching this new technology in a number of stores across the UK by mid-summer.

Traffic lights will signal when customers are allowed to enter the store based on individual store limits. When the light signals green, the doors will open allowing the next customer in line to enter.

The traffic light system will run alongside a number of other measures in place to help maintain social distancing, including protective screens at checkouts, distancing markers on shop floors, sanitisation stations for customers and signage to offer clear guidance on how to shop safely.

“The protection and safety of our customers and employees is our top priority and this new system is an accurate and effective way to allow us to control customer numbers in stores,” said Richard Thornton, communications director at Aldi.

“The system’s trial was well received by our customers and we will be gradually rolling this new social distancing measure out nationwide from this week.”
