Newtownards butchers H&J Carnduff has been named the best in the UK, a wonderful legacy and tribute to the family’s late son and brother who passed away in 2019.

H&J Carnduff are no strangers when it comes to winning awards. The family butchers has chalked up numerous accolades over the years, not least five Great Taste Awards late last year. Yet every award is tinged with sadness since the family business lost John tragically to stomach cancer.

John Carnduff started helping out in his father and uncle’s business when he was just 11 years old and dedicated himself to the shop, eventually seeing it crowned the best in Northern Ireland.

Following diagnosis with stomach cancer in July 2019, he sadly passed away just five months later.

Prior to his passing he asked his sister Rachel if she could try and achieve some of the dreams that he had for the business in a short bucket list, with one of these being winning UK Butchers Shop of the Year.

His sister Rachel said: “We are all so happy but so heartbroken at the same time because he wasn’t here to see it, but amazing to have done it and we know how proud he would be.
