A fourth-generation family business has expressed their delight at winning the Butcher of the Year Award at this year’s NR Awards.

Cunningham’s Butchers, based in Kilkeel, secured the title at the gala awards night on Friday 20th October at the Crowne Plaza Belfast.

Judges were very impressed with the store, which incorporates a butchery, bakery, deli and steakhouse, praising both the store itself and the staff.

Independently judged by Spotcheck, the awards were judged to exacting standards over a three-month period.

Judges noted the “amazing range of top-quality meat and related products” available, adding that the store was “well merchandised and attractive”.

“Staff were knowledgeable and confident in helping customers choose what to buy,” they added.

It was a family affair as Cunninghams collected their award on stage, with James and his brother Christopher, Donna and Bernadette all equally thrilled with the win.

Speaking after being presented with their award, James said it was a “brilliant honour”.

“To be nominated was a great honour, but to win the overall Northern Ireland Butcher of the Year really is one of the most special moments we’ve had as a family business.”

The Neighbourhood Retailer Awards reward excellence, recognise achievement, raise industry standards, and reward entrepreneurial spirit and are Northern Ireland’s most prestigious retail awards.
