Drumquin retailer retires after 40 years
Much loved Drumquin retailer Gerald McKenna hands keys over to new owner as retirement beckons
Gerald McKenna, the award-winning retailer whose family’s local store has served the Drumquin community for almost 40 years, is handing over the keys of his successful SPAR store to new owner Jonathan Millar.
Jonathan will continue to bring the choice, value and support that Gerald has established in the past 38 years, as well as the team working in the store.
Prior to Mr McKenna opening his store in 1983 as a VG, his parents Micky and Eileen traded from the site from the 1950s establishing firm family roots in the community. After 21 successful years as a VG, Gerald rebranded the store to a ViVO in 2004, and ultimately became a SPAR in 2014. Investing over £100,000 in the business to evolve around the changing needs of the community, the store won a coveted Convenience Store of the Year award in 2010.
In good hands
Speaking of the change in ownership, Mr McKenna says he knows the shop will be in good hands with Mr Millar; “The store is a hub of the local community, we have established ourselves as trusted neighbours in Drumquin and have supported many local groups, organisations and initiatives as well as providing our essential services.
“Retirement is bittersweet, however I am very proud of the legacy of our store and my parent’s legacy that came before us. All our children’s work ethics were developed in this shop, and we have worked with some of the best employees in our local area providing a friendly and personal service. I’m delighted to hand the keys over to Jonathan and his family, and I am confident Jonathan’s experience will allow him to continue our passion for serving the local community.”
New venture
Jonathan is originally from Limavady and is currently living outside Omagh town. He brings a wealth of retail experience with him as he starts his own venture with SPAR Drumquin.
Jonathan commented; “Taking over the reins at SPAR Drumquin is a big honour as Gerard has left a successful and thriving business with a fantastic team of staff. I am really looking forward to this next chapter in my career and working with Henderson Wholesale and the many local suppliers and brands they bring to our shelves.
“I’d like to wish Gerard all the best with his retirement with Jacqueline and look forward to welcoming them in store very soon!”
