Resilience of Local Traders Recognised

Mayor pays tribute to resilient local traders 

The Guildhall Square in Derry/Londonderry saw the welcome return of the Walled City Market at the weekend on its first outing since the Covid-19 lockdown restrictions on retail.

The market was back in a limited capacity on Saturday, offering a much welcome platform for local traders as the campaign continues to rebuild business in the city centre.

Social Distancing

Arrangements were in place to allow shoppers plenty of space for social distancing, and the outdoor backdrop offered extra reassurance for shoppers.

Council recently launched its Small Spend Giant Difference campaign to support local businesses by encouraging people to shop local where possible and help sustain smaller local traders as they enter the recovery period following lockdown.

Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District Council, Councillor Brian Tierney, took the opportunity to meet with traders and discuss some of the challenges they are currently facing

Upbeat and Committed

He said that despite the many issues, local traders were remaining upbeat and committed to creating the right environment to rebuild customer confidence. “I was delighted to see the market return to the Guildhall Square, bringing some much needed colour and energy back into the city centre. It was a great chance to speak to traders, to see the quality of the products on offer locally, and the commitment to reassuring customers and rebuilding the local retail sector.

“The message I really want to get across to people is the importance of shopping local and supporting the small local businesses that are most impacted by the current uncertain trading conditions. Investing in the local economy is something that will benefit everyone in the long term and ensure a thriving and successful city that’s appealing to retailers and investors.

“I’m hopeful that based on Saturday’s positive experience we will see the market return in an increased capacity to its regular monthly slot.”
