Retail NI Hits Out at Executive Office Regulations on Table Service
Table service only from 24th May - won't work for retail's in-store cafes

Retail NI has expressed concern that the new regulations announced by the Executive on strict table service for all hospitality will make it near impossible for cafes and coffee shops within retail premises, to open on Monday.

Retail NI Chief Executive Glyn Roberts said “These regulations make it extremely difficult for cafes and coffee shops within retail stores and shopping centres to open on Monday.  Strict table service for these businesses will just not work for these businesses which rely on self-service and which will now have to employ table staff by Monday to allow them to open”

“This goes far wider than just retail; it will impact on stand-alone coffee shops and many fast-food businesses that make up our high streets”

“When reopening took place last year, the Executive Office did not have this table service regulation and we are amazed that such an ill-thought-out proposal could be brought forward. Yet again this is another example of the Executive Office not consulting with business before they publish regulations which will have a big impact on the economy”

“Retail NI has raised this issue with the Department for the Economy, and we urge the Executive to drop this ridiculous regulation immediately”
