Retail NI Welcomes Establishment of High Streets Taskforce

High Streets in need of emergency solutions to survive

“In our meetings with Ministers we outlined the need for the Executive to establish a High Street Recovery Taskforce” said Retail NI’s Glyn Roberts.”Given the growing number of retail outlets closing as a result of Covid-19, this is no longer a high streets crisis – it is a high street emergency. We welcome the decision of the Executive to set up this taskforce and are pleased Ministers have listened to our views”

Commenting on decisions reached by the Executive regarding mandatory masks in shops from Monday 10th August, Retail NI Chief Executive Glyn Roberts said “Retail NI and our members will work with the Executive to get its message out to consumers on the mandatory wearing of face coverings in shops. We are reassured by Ministers that retailers and their staff will not be required to police or enforce the wearing of face coverings and it will be the individual responsibility of the shoppers to comply with this law.

“Our members will continue to play their part to ensure the shopping experience is safe and enjoyable for consumers. The priority remains the safety of our members’ staff and shoppers”
