The UK sugar confectionery category is currently worth £1.4bn and is in 3.9 per cent value sales growth year on year1.

Skittles is one of the fastest growing major fruit confectionery brands worth £38m and delivering growth of +15 per cent year-on-year – that’s three times faster than the total category5!

2013 was the brand’s third year of double digit growth and two of the top five best-selling singles fruit SKUs in Independent and Symbol stores are Skittles. A pack of Skittles (and Starburst) is sold every second and globally, the Skittles brand is worth over US$1billion!

Due to the economic downturn, cash-strapped shoppers continue to spend less time and money on evenings out and instead stay at home for a big night in. 47 per cent of consumers are spending less money on out-of-home entertainment and 50 per cent are eating out less. Combined with the fact that 66 per cent of sugar occasions at home are shared, these figures highlight a real sales opportunity for the sharing bag format such as the Skittles and Starburst Tear and Share Pouches.
