Luggage that makes a difference

The Northern Ireland businessman who invented an award winning backpack for young people in foster care is one of the speakers taking part in Derry City and Strabane District Council’s Enterprise Week.

Dave Linton, the man behind ‘Madlug’ who created a backpack for young people in care, will be giving companies in Derry and Strabane a unique insight into the success of his business. He will also talk about how he has developed a worldwide award-winning brand and promoted a very good cause.

Speaking ahead of Enterprise Week, Dave Linton says he is looking forward to being part of Enterprise Week to share his story with business leaders across the North West region. He says he is proud of the work ‘Madlug’ has achieved and believes he can offer valuable advice to entrepreneurs to help them gain a greater understanding of the hardships of business and the key to success.

When explaining how ‘Madlug’ got started, Dave explained the ethos behind his business: “We discovered that Health Trusts don’t provide suitcases and more often than not, children in care put all their worldly belongings into a bin bag as they move from one place to the next. Madlug stands for Make a Difference Luggage, and this aim is clear in the mission of the company and we have a ‘Buy one Give one’ approach: with every bag you purchase, one will be given to a child in care.

“I am looking forward to being part of Derry and Strabane’s Enterprise Week events where I can pass on any knowledge or advice and help encourage more people to start their own businesses.  I am very keen to share what I learned developing my own business with everyone during my talk and hope I can inspire local businesses in the area with my own experience.”

Business Support manager with Derry City and Strabane District Council, Louise Breslin, said the Council is thrilled to have speakers of such a high calibre taking part in Enterprise Week: “We are delighted to be welcoming Dave Linton from Madlug to be one of our guest speakers as part of the Enterprise Week programme.  Dave is an engaging and inspirational entrepreneur, who is prepared to share his steps to success and help local businesses to explore how they can achieve their own definition of success.  Anyone who attends this event is guaranteed to be motivated by his energy and passion for business.”

Dave will be speaking at “Start Your Social Enterprise – Make a Difference” on Tuesday 5th March at the Strabane District Caring (32-36 Bridge Street Strabane) from 10am to 2:30pm. Dave will also take part in the “Derry and Strabane District Council Social Enterprise Innovation Seed Fund” from 1pm to 2:30pm.

These events are a part of the larger Enterprise Week, which will be held from the 4th to the 8th March, and will highlight various areas of business and enterprising skills through a variety of free events. Some of these include training or inspiration or an established business seeking advice on planning, marketing or lead generation, there is something for you with over 20 custom events.
